What Happens If You Don't Treat Gum Disease?

Gum issues are the leading causes of teeth loosening and fallout. In most cases, gum disease occurs due to poor oral hygiene, and if left untreated, it can affect your oral health. Here are 3 consequences of untreated gum disease:

Bleeding Gums

As you know, a lack of proper teeth-cleaning techniques can lead to gum disease. If you ignore daily teeth brushing and flossing, plaque will build up, which triggers the body's immune response. This causes inflammation and damage to the gum tissues. Over time, the swollen gum tissues will weaken, making your teeth prone to bleeding. This mostly occurs when you brush or floss.

Imagine living with swollen or bleeding gums. You will likely experience challenges when eating and speaking. The teeth may also appear unattractive, which can affect your smile. The good thing is that scheduling professional dental visits and improving oral hygiene habits can help to reverse gum disease.

Gums and Bone Damage

Healthy gum tissues have very shallow pockets. However, infection of the gums can make the pockets deepen, causing more plaque to build up. After some time, the bacteria in the plaque will produce toxins that break down the gum tissues and bones that hold the teeth in place. This exposes the tooth's roots, putting you at risk of dental absence and tooth sensitivity. If not treated, the tooth may become loose and fall out.

Bad Breath

Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) involves an increase in plaque and tartar below and above the gum line. The plaque bacteria releases sulfur compounds, leading to a bad breath. Unfortunately, the bad breath does not go away on its own. For this reason, you need to seek treatment as soon as you notice the early signs.
