Tips for Treating Foul Breath

Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin
An electric toothbrushBad breath is a relatively common dental issue. It often results from poor oral hygiene. Sometimes, eating spicy foods can cause foul breath. It might also indicate an underlying illness like gum disease or diabetes. If the problem does not result from severe illness, you can cure it using these tips.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brush and floss your teeth regularly to remove trapped food particles and eliminate foul breath. Ensure you brush for at least two minutes twice daily after every meal. Use fluoride toothpaste and antibacterial mouthwashes for effective results. Remember to scrape your tongue to remove dead cells and smelly bacteria.

Change Your Diet

Spicy foods that contain onions and garlic can cause bad breath. These spices comprise sulfuric chemicals that leave a lingering odor for hours. Avoid these foods to maintain fresh breath. If you must eat them, use a strong mouthwash containing peppermint to neutralize the smell.

Also, increase your carbohydrate intake to ensure fresh breath and optimal oral health. Lack of sufficient carbohydrates forces your body to burn fats, leading to foul breath.

Make Lifestyle Changes

Habits such as tobacco and alcohol consumption can cause bad breath. These substances also make you susceptible to gum disease, leading to foul breath. If possible, avoid smoking and limit your alcohol intake.

Stay Hydrated

A dry mouth is another leading cause of foul breath. If the body is dehydrated, it may not be able to produce enough saliva. Saliva helps to fight bacteria and clean the mouth. Drinking plenty of fluids will ensure you stay hydrated and prevent dry mouth.

Regular Dental Checkups

Lastly, schedule dental checkups with our dentist for the correct diagnosis. We will perform a dental exam to determine the appropriate treatment. We may also recommend you undergo deep dental cleaning and scaling to remove stubborn plaque and tartar.
