What Else Can I Do to Improve My Dental Health?

a woman flossing her teethAre you brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day? You may think that is all you need to do to preserve your dental health. However, if you are concerned about the health of your teeth and gums, there are other things you may want to think about doing for your dental health. By making a few small changes, you may be able to keep your teeth strong and your gums healthy throughout your lifetime.

Increase the Amount You Brush and Floss

The American Dental Association recommends you brush your teeth twice a day as well as clean your gums with floss to maintain dental health. However, there is nothing wrong with increasing the amount of times you brush and floss, especially if you are worried about your dental health. You can elect to brush and floss your teeth after each meal or snack as well. When you brush frequently, you are keeping as much bacteria off your teeth and gums as possible. With fewer bacteria, there are fewer chances you are going to have issues with periodontal disease or tooth decay.

Take Your Vitamins

Many people take a multivitamin each day, and it is easy to understand why - they want to be as healthy as possible. Several of the vitamins and minerals in your multivitamin help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Both calcium and vitamin D are vital to keep your teeth strong so they can repel the acids from bacteria in your mouth. Vitamins C and A are antioxidants that keep inflammation in your body down and increase the blood flow to your gums, which keeps them healthier. Both phosphorous and manganese work to make sure your teeth stay mineralized and hard. By taking a multivitamin every day, you are giving your teeth and gums the vital nutrition they need.
