If you eat food that is too hot or spicy, you may have experienced a burning mouth before. Your lips and tongue may have tingled, and you may have burned the roof of your mouth or your tongue. While this may happen occasionally, there are people who experience burning sensations in their mouths with no real explanation. Here is information about burning mouth syndrome.
What Exactly Is Burning Mouth Syndrome?
Burning mouth syndrome is what medical and dental professionals call a sudden occurrence of burning in the mouth. It affects the roof of your mouth (palate) as well as your tongue. You may also notice your mouth tingles or feel scalded. In addition to the burning sensation, you may be excessively thirsty. Your mouth may be dry, and you may suffer from a sore throat as well.
What Causes Burning Mouth Syndrome?
No one knows for sure what causes burning mouth syndrome, but there are some treatments available. First, you need to increase your fluid intake, as researchers have found that drinking more fluid helps with the condition. If you use tobacco, you need to reduce your nicotine intake because it may help decrease the incidents of burning mouth you have. You may also want to reduce your alcohol intake and avoid spicy food as well.
What Should I Do?
If you have symptoms, you need to have a dentist check out your mouth. Other conditions can cause symptoms similar to burning mouth syndrome. You may have an autoimmune disease, diabetes, or thyroid issues that are causing your mouth to burn. Also, some people have symptoms of burning mouth because they have acid reflux.
Believe it or not, you can also experience burning mouth symptoms if your ill-fitting dentures rub against your gums. You can also have burning mouth symptoms if you are grinding your teeth at night.
