Do I Need to Have My Teeth Cleaned More Often?

A 3d rendering of the process of teeth cleaningOne of the most common questions we get at our dental office is about how often people should have their teeth professionally cleaned by our dentist. It can be a difficult question because while most people get their teeth cleaned and checked twice a year, some adults need to visit our dentist more often. Here are some examples of people who may want to consider having their teeth cleaned professionally more frequently.

If You Have Gum Disease

Perhaps the most common group of people who need to have their teeth cleaned more often are people with gum disease. Whether you have gum disease in its mildest form, usually called gingivitis, or a more severe case, you need to consider more frequent gum cleanings. Gum disease occurs when mouth bacteria infect the gums. More frequent gum cleanings can effectively treat or even cure gum disease.

Some people with gum disease need more specialized gum cleaning, using tools that can deep clean their gums above and below the gum line. If you have gum disease, be sure to ask our dentist if they think you should have your gums cleaned more often.

If You Are Pregnant

Pregnant women are prone to periodontal disease as well as tooth decay because of bodily changes and hormones. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can increase the amount of bad bacteria in your mouth as well as decrease saliva production. If you are pregnant, you may want to make an appointment to have your teeth and gums cleaned about every three months.

If You Have a Chronic Illness and Take Medication

Some patients with chronic illnesses may benefit from more frequent gum cleaning. For example, if you take heart medication, such as blood thinners, you should have your teeth cleaned every three months. Check with your general practitioner and our dentist to see if you may benefit from more frequent gum cleanings.

Are you not sure if you need more frequent gum cleaning? Why not make an appointment and ask our dentist during your next visit?
