Changes to Expect When You First Get Braces Put On
Posted on 1/24/2022 by Evan |
When you first get braces, they will feel funny and you will need to acclimate yourself to wearing them. However, have no worries, as you will likely get used to wearing them fairly fast.
What to Expect
Braces can hurt, but the pain is mild and can be reduced by taking over-the-counter pain medications. When you first get your braces, you will also be challenged when eating, as your jaw may feel somewhat achy. During the initial days of wearing braces, it is best to eat softer foods, such as yogurt, cheese, or pasta. As the discomfort slowly subsides, you will gradually get used to chewing with the braces. However, even after this period, avoid eating crunchy foods as the braces can easily snap if you bite down on anything hard. You will also have to adjust your brushing routine by using a more compact brush head. Brush at least twice a day and floss once daily. Use small circular strokes and take your time on each tooth. Expect to take your toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste with you regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
What Foods Should I Avoid?
Do not eat crunchy foods, such as chips, hard candy, nuts, and celery. Also, you want to avoid overly chewy foods, such as gummy candies or beef jerky. Sticky foods, such as licorice, caramels, and toffee should also be avoided. In addition, it is best to not to eat corn on the cob, or any food that involves additional effort to eat and chew. Try to avoid foods that can easily stick in the braces or between the teeth. Sugary foods can also increase the risk of decay.
Having new braces will take some time to get used to. However, you usually only need to wear braces for only 2 years, and you will be rewarded with a beautiful and healthier smile. Call us to find out more!
