What Causes Teeth to Decay?

What Causes Teeth to Decay? The teeth, gums, and mouth are home to all sorts of bacteria that help us digest our food or even contribute to the health of our mouths by protecting against harmful germs. However, sometimes too many bad bacteria can make their way into our mouths and start causing damage to our teeth and gums. Bacteria produce acids when they digest food that is left on our teeth, and those acids eat away at tooth enamel, making it more susceptible to decay. Today, we will talk about what causes teeth to decay to give you some tips on how you can prevent this from happening.

Tooth decay happens when bacteria feed on sugary foods

Certain bacteria living in your mouth feed on sugars and starches from food. When those foods are left on your teeth for too long, acid builds up. That is why it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss regularly, and see your dentist every six months or so for cleanings. If you let cavity-causing bacteria live between your gums and teeth, their acid can wear away at your protective enamel coating and lead to tooth decay. But when you remove plaque regularly by brushing, flossing, and seeing a dentist regularly, the chances are that will not happen. In short, poor oral hygiene is the leading cause of tooth cavities.

Root canals are used in the treatment of tooth decay

Many people believe that root canals treatment contributes to decay and mouth infection. The truth is that root canals are only performed on teeth that have already been decayed. If you are concerned about how you may be affected by a root canal, ask your dentist for details about how your procedure will be performed and if your tooth is at risk of infection or decay at any point. From there, you should be able to make an informed decision about whether or not a root canal is right for you. Our dentists are always here to answer all your questions concerning dental health. You are free to book an appointment on any day.
